I find this first unit to be a good overview about Teachers and Learners. First of all, it is analyzed the various aspect of the teacher, and how fexible he needs to be. While he might be excelling in some of the aspects of teaching, a good teacher should develop all of them in order to improve.
Then the unit is about the learners. The learners are analyzed firstly depending their age, divided into adults (18+), teenagers (13 - 17), pre pubescent (8 - 12) and young learners (less than 8 y/o); the differences in teaching among these categories are wide and the teacher needs to to focus on different aspects of teaching depending on the target learners. Depending on their age, the learners are also analyzed in several aspects (such as their motivation, attention span, life experience etc.) and all these aspects will also impact the way a teacher needs to act during class. Finally, it is also important to consider the proficiency level of the learners. Different levels will require a different approach from the teacher, and he has to submit appropriate material.
I was already familiar with most of these notions, thanks to the glottodidactics classes taken at the university.
