This unit covered the two of the four basic skills in teaching a language: reading and listening. Reading and listening are receptive skills and there are a variety of ways in which we can use them. It is important to teach students how to listen and read different pieces of information. For example, skimming a newspaper to get the general idea about an article is very different than reading it in detail to understand the content on a deeper level. This unit was helpful to me because I learned that there is more to teaching these receptive skills than just reading and listening- how you read and how you listen is very different depending on your motives.
