The difference between past tenses is pretty logical and obvious. In theory. People are usually smart enough to recognize grammar forms in texts. For example, "I had been living...." indicates a past perfect continuous sentence, no doubts about that. But then we go to the practice. And practice immediately breaks our brains... it feels like we are not so smart now! Does ot mean we have to limit ourselves and only use simple sentences? I believe, the answer is "no". We just have to practice more and more.
