It was very helpful to see the parallels between the present and past tenses, which match up identically with each other. For my teaching in Lao, it will be difficult to help them understand these concepts because there are no changes of verb tenses in their local language. However, knowing that the present and past follow similar structures will help speed up learning time in my students. The other challenge will be trying to help my pupils to understand and memorize the various and stubbornly unorthodox number of irregular simple past verb forms. There is really no easy way to do this, and I feel that I will need to act as a motivator and encourager because there are numerous verbs that follow no pattern and must simply be committed to long term memory.
