A good teacher needs to be passionate about teaching, knowledgeable of the subject matter, a role model for his or her students, able to assess the strengths and weaknesses of each student's language ability, and capable of correcting his or her students without demoralizing them. A good student must be receptive to listening to the target language, willing to assess their own performance periodically, strongly motivated to learn the target language, willing to ask questions, and willing to engage the language creatively. In all honesty, these attributes will be better represented in some teachers and students than others. However, by learning what attributes make up both a good student and a good teacher and what obstacles of age, ability, culture, and personality exist, we can learn how to become better in each of our roles and how to become better people overall.
