This unit covered course books and their advantages and disadvantages. This unit is important as it prepares the teacher for the inevitability of having to supplement a bland, outdated, or unsuitable curriculum with their own materials, and what materials they should consider. In my own experience I have found that teaching a class with a pre-selected course book can alleviate some stress from lesson planning, but the material can be too challenging for the students, or not applicable to their lives. This unit has provided me with some ideas to add to areas that the course book does not cover, or to enrich areas that are too sparse. For example, a lesson with challenging vocabulary could be supplemented with gap-fill exercises in the Study phase followed by a roleplay using the vocabulary in the Activate phase.
