Four receptive skills in learning a language are equally important, they are listening, reading, speaking and writing. This lesson focuses on reading and listening. Those two skills are not simply matters for the eyes and ears, but also a matter of using our minds to literally understand words and process them in our knowledge to gain understanding. There are many skills for listening and reading, such as predictive skills, scanning, skimming, detailed information, deduction from context. Before reading and listening, the teacher can teach students to understand difficult words or structures. If the students can't get past the stage of understanding every word to understand the content, they will never feel comfortable will receptive skills. Choosing topics that are suitable for students, creating interest, choosing right tasks can substantially improve the students receptive skills.
