There are four things that new students need to do with a new language: be exposed to it, understand its meaning, understand how it's constructed and be able to practise and produce it. Grammar is often the core of the language while vocabulary and functions are the leaves that add beauty and variety. The language blossoms only when those fundamentals are combined. A good language user knows how to use the language in a balanced and manageable way. ESA methods can be easily applied when teaching a new language. Sraight arrow approach is often used when teaching grammar or vocabulary, while Boomerang or Patchwork approaches are often used when teaching function based lessons. However this is not a rule and a good teacher will think of an effective structure that is most appropriate to the class.
