This unit was all about conditionals and reporting speech. Conditionals are sentences that contain the word if or when, refer to past, present and future possibilities. I learned that there are five different types of conditionals. The zero conditional refers to an action and facts that are irrefutable you can us if/ when without changing the meaning. The first conditional talks about a real situation in the future that is possible, probably or even certain, once the condition has been met. The second conditional communicates a present or future unreal hypothetical situation that is presently not true and is unlikely to ever be true. The third conditional refers to a hypothetical past action or non-action, and the hypothetical past consequence/ result. Finally, a mixed conditional refers to a hypothetical past action or state and the hypothetical present consequence. I think conditionals are very useful to learn how to report a conversation, but I do think it is easier to know how to use them as a native english speaker, then to teach someone these later in life. This type of learning makes me think of drill and skill and I find that I second guess myself. However, as a native english speaker, in an actual conversation I know that I would have no problem reporting the sentence in the correct manner. The second part of the unit was about what I mentions above; reporting speech. Reporting speech is how we would take a direct/ present sentence and say what happened at another point in time or to someone else.
