I really enjoyed this unit because I have a lot of experience with many of these topics. As a former PE teacher I used a lot of these techniques out on the PE court to create a positive environment, and those that I did not use there, I used when teaching summer school or an after school ESOL program. This unit covered topics of using eye contact, gestures, voice and using students names. While I already knew about pairing students in different fashions, I learned more about the benefits of each (whole, individual, and pairwork), and how each of these can impact the lesson at hand. Similar to that topic, I found the justification for the different seating chart options to be interest, since out on the PE course my students were organized very differently then inside the classroom. I learned the advantages and disadvantages of the different types of seating layouts, and based on class size or activity which would be most effective. Another interesting topic that I learned a lot about, was guidance on writing on the board, giving individual attention, and the positives and negatives of student vs. teacher talk time. I think it is very common for teachers to want to hear their own voice, but that does not mean it helps the students learn. In my experiences, teachers that talk to much tend to create boredom in their classes, cause their students to become unmotivated and behavior problems tend to arise. I learned about the advantages of using simple language, incorporating visual clues and how to check for students understanding. From my experiences, part of the reason why my classroom management is so effective is because I establish a good rapport with my students, I keep my expectations consistent, and I prevent problem behaviors by having "withitness." This was a term used in my professional development, which basically had to do with being observant, knowing your students, and eliminating problems before they even have a chance to flourish.
