As teachers we have to ensure the students are introduced to new language. The four things the students need to do with new vocabulary. The first is to expose them to it. There are a number of activities during the Engage phase (ESA) that can be implemented but the goal of the activity is used to help engage the students and to elicit and explain the meaning of the word. Secondly the student needs to understand it's meaning. Thirdly we must teach the student how the word is constructed. And lastly the student must be able to practice and use it. I learned that there's a rule that a learner's receptive (knows & doesn't use) vocabulary is much larger than his/her the words the student knows and uses. So it's our job to teach them how to use new words so their widen their productive vocabulary. The level of difficulty to learning new vocabulary depends on numerous factors. When selecting the vocabulary for the learner the teacher must take into account the appropriacy to the students, task, frequency and coverage (we want to teach them words they can used/applied in different situations, and teachability. Techniques & methods for teaching students learn the meaning of the word include mime & action, pictures, contrast, & discussions to name a few. It is critical for the students need to know/learn the meaning of the word, how it's used, where it belongs in a sentence (word grammar), how it interacts with other words, spelling, and pronunciation. ESA methods to introduce new language can easily be applied. It's my job to think about what structure suits and is most appropriate to the class.
