The most important task of the first lesson with a new class is to establish rapport with the students. The best way to do this is to have some short exercises that involve interaction with the class such as music, games, pictures, tongue twisters or interviews. This should be done right at the beginning before launching into the lesson plan. One of the biggest challenges of a new teacher will be the large class. In teaching a large class, I like the idea of using work sheets, pair work, and choral repetition.
