In the unit I learned about the various ways language is introduced to our learners. Some of the ways language can be taught is through grammar - translation, audio - lingualism, presentation and practice, talk based, communicative language, community language, silent way, suggestopaedia and the lexical approach. I think it is important for the teacher to know what her lesson objectives and outcomes are, and to know her students in using these various techniques. Something else I have learned through experience is, even though a whole class may prefer certain techniques of learning, it is important to work on the unfavorable ones also because it the real world sometimes we are not always able to choose our favorite. This lesson also had many ideas of how to express information to the students; realia, drawings, gap-fill, lists, all of which are ways to engage your students depending on the objective outcomes and goals. I tend to gravitate to the hands on and creative activities because I have found that students who actively use the knowledge tend to remember it more quickly and can relate it to their own experiences, then completing work sheets. Finally I learned about 3 different ESA teaching structures that revolved around Engage, Study and Activate. There was the straight and narrow approach, which is beneficial for lower level students because it is a very controlled approach. The next approach was called Boomerang, which gives more flexibility and unlike the straight and narrow it does not withhold as much information. What makes this stage more challenging is you need to have an awareness for your class/ students about what challenges they will or will not face in order to have activities planed for the next activate stage. The Patchwork approach allows the teacher to incorporate many more mini-sequences for building knowledge. This approach allows the teacher to have a lot more flexibility and to have more study and activation stages. The rule with this approach was that the lesson needs to start with engage and end with activate. I think it is important for me to know that this stage is usually used with intermediate and above, and while I would like the flexibility of this stage, it would not be appropriate for younger learners.
