There are a myriad of different methodologies that have been identified, used, weeded, and combined to best teach students a language. That said one isn't better than the other. A popular and effective, method, that can be expanded depending on the level of the student, is called Engage, Study, and Activate otherwise known at ESA. This approach allows for different methodologies to be applied around this method.
Engage can be seen as the 'warming up' state aimed to arouse the student's interests level and get them involved by using a various methods that use music, games, and or interesting pictures, to name a few. For example I'll show them a picture or draw one on the board and ask "what is this object I drew" and point to it. I can even use a real object. The goal here is to elicit as much information from the students as possible. The next stage is Study. These activities are focused on the language and information and how's it's used to construct a sentence, and it's meaning along with pronunciation. Some excessive for this section involves a great deal of different types of worksheet exercises. Next is the Activate stage. Here is where the students can work in groups to communicate freely and play a communication game. It's difficult to pin point but the teacher - student correction should be the last resort. There is a difference between mistake and error. No matter which it is at absolutely no point should the teacher not take on a caring, understanding, encouraging tone. The student should always feel encouraged and supported by the teacher.
