Evaluation and testing is an integral part of most English teaching courses. There are three primary methods of assessment: 1) tutorials; 2) evaluation by students; tests. Individual tutorials are very helpful but teachers may not have sufficient time to conduct these on a regular basis, especially in large classes. Evaluation by students can either be by questionnaire or by guided discussions. Guided discussions can be useful in helping the students understand what the teacher is trying to accomplish in the classroom and help the teacher understand how the students are reaction to your lessons. Placement tests or diagnostic tests are done to determine the level of the student at the beginning of the class. Progress tests regularly test the material from a given period of study. Finally, there are numerous external examinations that are used by various agencies for different purposes, such as admission into universities, immigration and work.
