There are many methods and ideas for learning effectively, such as translation, PPP, task-based, and the silent way. They all have different focuses (such as task-completion or student-lead lessons). A very common method is the ESA method, which focuses on elicitation of responses and information. It can be used in different sequences- Straight Arrow, Boomerang, or Patchwork (suitable for only high level students). There are countless ideas for each phase of ESA. To engage, a teacher can use an intro prompt, play Alphabet Relay, or use anagrams. To study, a teacher can give crossword puzzles, use tongue twisters, or have students match pictures to words. For the activate phase, a teacher can incorporate role play or various communication games. It is important to give feedback, with consideration to culture, activity type, and stage of lesson. Corrections can be made by the teacher, the student, or peers. Common codes can be used for correcting worksheets.
