In Unit 3 of the 120-hour course, I learned about some of the different English teaching methods that are used in the classroom. While it is hard to define which method is the best, it is clear that students need an approach that motivates them, gives them frequent exposure to the English language, and allows them real opportunities to use what they have learned. The ESA (Engage, Study, Activate) approach fulfills the aforementioned requirements. An example of an Engage phase activity is showing students a picture and asking for their opinions about it. An example of a Study phase activity is having students complete a worksheet about the proper grammatical structures of a given topic. An example of an Activate phase activity is putting the students into groups and having them make a poster.
