Phrasal verbs area topic that can confuse English learners because when these words come together, they take on a different meaning than what each individual word means. For example: “put up with”. Put means to place something somewhere. Up refers to a direction. With refers to someone or something joining together. However, put together the phrase means to endure something. This transitive inseparable type must have the object follow the phrasal verb. There are other types that have other rules. Learning the rule and looking at where each word is placed in the sentence will help students know which one is which. Modals express different things even though we tend to use them interchangeably. Might and may are examples. “May” expresses a less than 50% chance of an occurrence while “might” expresses an even lower chance of something occurring.
