This unit was on teaching pronunciation and phonology. The beginning of this unit was really useful on learning about intonation. Intonation is the rise/ fall, or the fall/ rise of the english language. Depending on where the intonation (stress) is located, helps to dictate what the speaker is hoping to get out of the sentence. This unit went through techniques for teaching intonation (nonsense words, gesture, humming/singing, the board. Techniques for indicating stress include contrastive stress, by gesture, the board and stress marks. In the lesson I learned how air is moved through the mouth to create the different kinds of sounds, and the names of the different sounds. There are plosive, fricative, nasal and lateral sounds. Techniques for teaching pronunciation include peer dictation, your own mouth, visuals, phonemes and tongue twisters. I think one of the most interesting things I learned about this lesson was the phonemic symbols. I have seen many of these characters before, but never knew the breakdown of the sounds the character was meant to depict. I believe this is an important lesson to help young learners know which parts of the syllable should be stressed, and how stressing different parts can create a different meaning.
