There are many elements to consider in managing a classroom. Eye contact shows confidence and helps maintain discipline, but should be used at appropriate times. A teacher's voice can grab attention with varied, natural, clear language. Gestures from the teacher can reduce unnecessary teacher talk time (TTT), and help with conveying meaning. There are different grouping structures possible (whole class, on your own, pair work, groups) and should take into consideration amount of TTT, individual attention, and how much control or student-student interaction is needed for the lesson. Class arrangement can depend on space available, type of furniture, class age, nationality, and personalities. Good questions to ask yourself are, "which is best for the type of particular activity?"and "How will this arrangement affect classroom atmosphere?". Circular and horseshoe arrangements can be useful in increasing intimacy and student interaction, while rows are excellent for lectures. Rules of thumb include memorizing individual names, preventing excessive attention to particular students, keeping it simple, and using gestures/miming/picture, and always staying positive. It is important to ask for suggestions from the classroom, and seeking advice from peer teachers with disciplinary advice. A teacher should respond immediately during negative behavior, ensuring reprimand is done in private.
