This unit was on the different types of assessments a teacher can use throughout a school year, or lesson. There were three main types I learned about, tutorials, evaluations and tests. Within the tests component, there are many different types of tests that can be administered at different times to get different results. Placements tests are done at the beginning of a course to place a student at the correct level. I did find it hard ti distinguish between placement tests and diagnostic tests because their definitions are so similar. According to the provided information, a diagnostic test is similar in content information to a placement test, however, they are used to help the teacher prepare the lessons and materials. I think this is different then the placement test which helps determine where the student should be. Progress tests are used periodically to gauge what language has been remembered, and let the student and teacher know what items need to be worked on. I learned that progress tests should include a balance of the four skills of reading, writing, speaking and listening. Practice tests are typically used would external examinations, and follow the format the student will see for that exam. Some examples of the external exams that a practice test may prepare a student for include TOEFL, IELTS, and TOEIC.
