Evaluations are numerous and can help teachers identify a students proficiency level, areas of learning to stress, motivation for learning, and to prepare materials before, during, or after classes. Student evaluations can be given in the form of an anonymous questionnaire, or a guided class discussion. To benefit the teacher (and student), placement tests are given before classes. It is mandated that teachers give exams throughout the length of the class, so many teachers prefer to give short, numerous progress tests for students at the end of a lesson block or certain amount of covered material. At the end, there is typically an achievement of proficiency test to help students and teachers alike understand the level achieved and any problem areas. Progress tests balance all four skills of reading, writing, speaking, and listening. They should only include language material covered in class. Diagnostic tests are similar to placement tests but may be more extensive to help teachers prepare and adapt material to the students' needs before class begins. Practice tests are useful in preparing the students with the teacher's format and style of testing.
