The past tense in English is used to describe actions that have already happened. For the past simple tense, "-ed" is typically added to the base form of the verb, however there are various irregular verbs, which do not have any particular rule for memorization. Students need to learn these through fun activities like card memory games between classmates, storytelling, and even working on resumes and simulating job interviews. The past continuous is used to describe gradual development in the past, interrupted past actions, and past actions which began before and continued after. This tense usually requires a reference of time, or an implied time frame. The Activate stage can include detective games and storytelling. The past perfect uses the word "had" plus the past participle. Past perfect verbs occur before the other actions in the sentence. The words "when" and "after" to illustrate this tense. For the Activate stage, students can use storytelling, or retelling stories backward. The past perfect continuous is not very frequently used, however a big usage is when talking about longer actions in the past, continuously going on until that past verb. This is regardless of continuation after the past verb.
