This unit was on teaching receptive skills. Similar to how native English speakers may find it hard to break down grammar because of the way we learned it, I think it can also be easy to miss teaching topics such as receptive skills. Although one of my lessons would not solely focus on this topic, it would be good to integrate this while teaching another topic. Receptive skills have to do with reading and listening, and how there are two general categories for the reasons we use these skills. We read and listen either to gain a purpose or for entertainment. When we read there are other skills we also use like predicting, scanning, skimming, reading detailed information and deduction. When teaching receptive skills it is a good idea to consider the language that is used, this can be done by pre-teaching vocabulary, carefully selecting texts, trying to make sure the topic is of interest, creating interest by coming up with engaging activities and creating tasks that promote understanding.
