This unit presented an overview of the main parts of speech in English: nouns, adjectives, articles, verbs, adverbs, pronouns, conjunctions, and prepositions. There are sub-categories within each part of speech--for example, nouns can be countable or uncountable, and articles can be definite or indefinite. Verbs can be transitive or intransitive, and pronouns can be personal, possessive, reflexive, or relative.
The unit discussed common points of confusion for students learning English as a foreign language. One example is the distinction between possessive pronouns like "mine" and "ours" and possessive adjectives like "my" and "our," the difference being that possessive pronouns take the place of a noun, and possessive adjectives precede and describe a noun. Another example is that students often have difficulty identifying prepositions, as there is no definite rule for preposition placement.
When identifying a part of speech, one must always consider a word's function within the context of the sentence.
