Burton, Nebraska TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit covered stress, intonation, phonology, and how to teach pronunciation to ESL/EFL learners. I was never sure how to teach this topic to others, so this unit gave me a lot of great ideas. However, I would disagree with the idea of not teaching the phonetic alphabet. Whenever I tried learning a language, I was always annoyed that the teachers would not use the IPA alphabet to make things easier and just have me trying to copy their pronunciation, making me guess what sounds and letters actually have different pronunciations, guessing how I was supposed to pronounce it when reading the IPA details (which was specifically designed to quickly and efficient describe how sounds sounds should be pronounced), and so on. Not only that, I've known Chinese English learners that were annoyed that they were never taught the IPA alphabet and had to discover it and learn it on their own. When I have an intermediate class that I'm teaching for a long time, I think I will dedicate a week (or, if a once-a-week class, then as optional homework) to the IPA alphabet and sentence/word intonation/stress.
