This unit was about the different types of materials used in the classroom room, and the advantages/ disadvantages of using them. The first type of material that is talked about is authentic materials. Authentic material examples include programs, magazines, newspapers, songs, poems and brochures to name a few. While authentic materials are not graded for language level, they are great for motivating students, helping them to gain confidence, and are interesting. Created materials differ from authentic materials because they are created by the teacher. While created materials can be graded by language level, the information does not always have to be up to date or topical. When I was teaching Middle School Health, I had a lot of fun creating my own supplemental materials because I am creative. I made all sorts of things from worksheets, quizzes, to tests. Some examples of created materials can include crosswords, word searches, role-play cards, flashcards, gap fill activities and picture stories. Finally, this unit went over course books. Course books have advantages such as having a syllabus, balanced mix of grammar, continual progression, tried and tested results, and good ideas for an inexperienced teacher. Some disadvantages of course books include; their not always specific to the needs of the students, the students may not like using the book, it can prevent teachers from being creative, and teachers don't usually get to choose what course book they use.
