Receptive skills are skills used to absorb information about the context of a language. Reasons to read and listen are for a specific purpose, or for entertainment. Skills that can be used are predictive, scanning (for score results), skimming (for the general idea), deriving detailed information, and deductive from context (to understand not only literally but based on the language culture). To prevent struggling, pre-teach students vocabulary, select texts appropriate for student level, and choose interesting topics (interesting to the class). Getting to know what is of interest to the students will make it that much more fun. Regarding tasks, they need to be realistically achievable. Jigsaw reading and unscrambling jumbling texts are popular tasks.
