This unit has taught me about the advantages and disadvantages of using course books and how to use authentic materials. Authentic materials are useful because they appeal to the student. Students are motivated when using authentic materials which builds their confidence. Advantages for using coursebooks are: they are less time consuming to supplement, they provide a balanced mix of grammar, vocabulary, and skills work, they offer progression, and are usually appealing to the eye. Some of the disadvantages are they do not fit the specific needs of the students, students may not like the books, and teachers do not get to choose the actual book being used in the classroom.
