Unit 11 focuses on reading and listening, which are the two receptive skills. This unit covers our reasons and motivations for reading and listening, followed by an explanation of the importance of context, and the different specialist skills that readers and listeners rely on. However, when teaching and learning these two receptive skills, teachers and students can find themselves encountering problems with the language that is being used, the topic of the text or dialogue and the comprehension tasks. This unit provides possible solutions to counter all these issues and ends by providing an example of a typical receptive skills lesson, which uses the Patchwork ESA method.
This unit introduced me to various issues that I might encounter as a teacher when teaching receptive skills to students, and possible solutions to these issues. Since the unit covers these solutions, I am certain that I will be referring to this chapter in the future when planning lessons, to try and prevent these issues from occurring. The example exercises that are included in this unit will surely also prove to be useful when creating my own lesson plans.
