One of the more interesting parts of this unit was that differences that adults and young learners start learning a language. Adults are more likely to compare their native language to the language they are learning, while young learners are more likely to absorb the language. I did not realize that I followed similar paths when learning Spanish at a younger age and Japanese at an older age. I compare Japanese to English much more and actually try to directly translate English to Japanese. While Spanish is more natural and felt more natural at a younger age to speak. I found myself comparing my own experiences learning languages and how I would categorize my professors and myself while reading the unit. I realized I have had only one professor in Spanish who really taught the styles this unit said a good teacher should have, while my other professors mostly lectured us the majority of the time and then quizzed us. I have taken my studies seriously outside of the classroom and I believe that is why I have continued to develop in my languages. I hope to use these experiences and lessons from these units to be a more successful teacher in the future in engaging and encouraging students to use the language in and out of the classroom.
