Prior to this lesson, I was not aware of the ESA format or all of the options within each section of Engage, Study and Activate. I was also unaware of the different teaching methods, especially the silent method where colored rods are used to represent different aspects relating to language. After having studied this section, I will work the ESA structure, particularly the Patchwork structure into the private tutoring I do now. Instead of simply helping my students with homework or essays, I will aim to do at least one lesson every week where I set up multiple activities in the Engage stage such as Scattergories and sentence prompts, then move on to Hangman in the Study stage (some of my students are young while others are older and this seems to be an enjoyable activity for all ages), and finally Activate their understanding by doing role-play/ simulations of the information just learned. With repeats of engage and study in between the lesson, the Patchwork format will help keep them entertained and motivated while ensuring learning is happening.
