Unit 12 familiarizes us with teaching productive skills, looks at difference between accuracy and fluency, outlines a number of activities for developing/improving speaking and writing skills, techniques for encouraging students to interact, as well as provides helpful guidelines for a teacher for every teaching stage when dealing with creative speaking activities. The unit also stresses the importance of handwriting, punctuation, spelling and creative writing when teaching writing skills.
It was useful for me to learn about what techniques and activities are relevant, when working on students’ productive skills. Students should be encouraged to improve handwriting, urged to speak and interact, try to produce creative writing and creative communication, and we can implement that by creating the appropriate environment and encorporating the required activities.
Another fairly important thing that I noted from this unit is consideration of the planning time for written and spoken tasks that we should allocate for students. I will remember that we should focus on students’ improvements and well-performed tasks, rather than on mistakes and failures.
Games listed in the unit and examples of typical creative speaking activity and creative writing activity lessons are other helpful ideas that I appreciate a lot.
