In this unit we studied about Parts of Speech.
All the words in English can be divided into 8,9 or more groups according to their function in the language. These groups are called as parts of speech. It comprises the most basic grammar terminology every English user must be familiar with in order to understand how language works to create a meaning to the sentence.
In this unit we studied various parts of speech stated below-
1) Noun - A Noun is a word that names a person, thing, animal, place or an abstract idea.
Eg- teacher, pencil, man, cat, Home etc)
2) Verb- a verb is a word that expresses an action, occurrence or state of being. Verbs also indicate time(past, present, future) and are used with many verb tenses.
Eg- go, watch, play, eat , smell etc
3) Adjectives- an adjective is a word that modifies(describes) a noun or pronoun. Adjectives inform about the qualities and fractures of people, things or concepts.
Eg- big/small , clean/ dirty, modern/ancient, dark , stunning etc
4) Adverbs- an adverb is a type of word that has many uses in English, it can modify a verb, an adjective , another adverb or a whole sentence.
Eg- very, much , here, there, above, actually , quickly etc
5) Pronouns- a pronoun is a word that replaces a noun or refers to it.
Eg- I, me , she , it, his, her, it, you etc
6) Articles- articles are used before nouns to describe it as something specific or non specific.
Eg- the , an , a
7) Gerunds- a gerund is big form of a verb used as a noun. It is used same way as a noun I.e. as a subject or object.
Eg- playing, stealing, etc.
8) Preposition- preposition is a word that conveys relationship between other words , usually in time , place or direction.
Eg- at, on , by, into, on , above, near etc
9) Conjunction- conjunction is a word that connects 2 or more words, phrases and causes reflecting some kind of logical relationship between connected elements.
Eg- and, but , or, either or, neither nor etc
It is vital for any English speaker or writer to be familiar with the parts of speech in order to form a correct sentence with proper grammar. Moreover a word can function as a different part of speech depending on its role in the sentence structure.
For eg- The defendants lawyers object to any claim made by the prosecution.
( object is a verb , meaning to oppose)
They also showed on object found in the scene of the crime as exhibit A.
( here, Object is a noun , meaning physical item )
