There are 4 Past tenses in English: Simple, Continuous, Perfect and Perfect Continuous.
We use Simple when we speak about actions in the past that is named of defined (last year, last week, yesterday, etc.).
We (in general) use Continuous (was/were + ing-form) when we talk about actions that were going on at certain time in the past.
We use Perfect (had+V3) when we talk about actions that took place and finished in the past before some other actions (also in the past).
We use Perfect Continuous (had been + ing-form) when we speaking about actions that began before a time in the past and continued up until that time with no indication whether or not the action continued beyond that time.
