This unit discusses various teaching methods and techniques, their objectives, effectiveness, advantages and drawbacks. Each method has its pros and cons and produces certain results, depending on number of circumstances. However, some methodologies have influenced the current TEFL practice and contributed to development of various approaches. Much more broadly, therefore, the unit describes the ESA (Engage, Study and Activate) method, introduced by Jeremy Harmer, and examines each element separately, providing a systematic guidance.
In addition, this course offers many helpful tips for teachers to avoid using the wrong tools and actions at different stages of lessons, and also provides ideas of elicitation techniques that are important in the teaching/learning process.
The entire content of the unit was completely new to me and gave a comprehensive knowledge. Getting an idea of the lesson sequences, I was able to understand what each particular phase involves and what approach and methods we should use at certain stages (elicitation, praising, correction, encouraging). The Correction Techniques section was incredibly informative and showed the difference between mistakes and errors, subtle techniques and appropriate reasons for correction.
The unit also offers a variety of activities and games that correspond to each stage of the ESA method, which gives us a comprehensive approach to teaching.
