Unit 13 focuses on how we can teach pronunciation and phonology, which are often neglected when teaching English. Pronunciation should be an integral part of any English course. This unit aims to help teachers teach pronunciation to students in an effective manner, by introducing general guidelines. First, the unit looks at the concepts of intonation, followed by stress, the phonemic alphabet and lastly, articulation. It also includes examples of activities that can be used as effective teaching techniques.
I have often encountered the International Phonetic Alphabet when looking up words in the dictionary, but I was never able to understand and read it until now. Similarly, this unit has encouraged me to look deeper into pronunciation, as only some of the basic concepts are outlined, and I would like to extend my personal knowledge by doing some further reading.
