Modal Auxiliary Verbs follow basic rules: can, could, may, might, shall, should, will, would, must,
have to, need to, needn’t and ought to and refer to obligation, possibility, permission, ability and
advice. They can also be used to reflect different degrees of formality. Charts and examples were
given, and I found them helpful.
Two voices are used in English, active and passive which means the sentence has the same meaning
but a different focus, examples of their form and usage were highlighted.
Relative clauses are a group of words containing a subject and verb, the three clauses are
independent, dependent and relative (two types defining and non-defining and examples were given
for both cases highlighting the role of the pronoun).
Phrasal verbs or multi-word verbs consist of a verb plus one or two particles, an example is ‘she told
Paul off’ which is the same as ‘she criticised/scolded Paul’. The three types are intransitive, transitive
separable and transitive inseparable. These should be used naturally during uncontrolled practice
conversations. In this last exercise I thought the examples were not particularly clear and too short.
