This unit was focused on managing all aspects of a classroom, from seating arrangements to maintaining discipline. The most important takeaway for me, which I was not aware of prior to this, was that different phases of ESA and different class sizes can have an impact on how the class should be physically organized as well as how much students or teachers should talk. It is important, for example, for the teacher to be at the front of the class and standing while giving instructions for an activity to a larger group, but when the class size is smaller, it is more beneficial to have a circular/ horseshoe set up and dial down the dominant position of the teacher, especially where pair or group work is concerned. Aside from this, body language such as eye contact and gesturing can have a huge impact on learning, and should be used as needed through the various phases of teaching.
