Unit 10 provides an interesting and very useful video-example of a real lesson that was conducted twice for Thai students. During both of the lessons, the teacher uses different approaches and maintains different attitude to the students, which results in poor and good efficiency respectively.
Comparing the two lessons allowed me to understand what a big role the teacher’s behavior plays, his approach, the right/wrong actions, and how his attitude affects the whole lesson process and atmosphere in the classroom.
Form the very beginning of the class 1 it was clear that the teacher did not try to build a good rapport with the students and did not follow the appropriate steps to produce an effective lesson and help the students absorb the knowledge in a proper way. Although he seemed to be fairly keen to deliver the language point, his wrong approach did not let him conduct the lesson as it would be desired. The teacher still appeared somewhat unfriendly and disinterested in student’s learning and was discouraging at times. He faced difficulties with organization of the students and failed to monitor their activities during the Study phase.
If I were a student in Class 1, I would feel exerted and confused (not understanding what the teacher is trying to elicit), and not encouraged enough throughout the whole lesson.
What was positive and encouraging to see in the Class 2 is the way the teacher covered a number of other grammar points during the lesson, while teaching a certain language point. He accurately conducted pronunciation drills with separate attention to individuals. Teacher’s positive attitude, committed approach, friendly atmosphere in the classroom, correct sequence of phases being followed - have led to a more organized lesson and learning environment, built better receptive skills, helped to understand a lesson concept effectively, and maintained active participation of the students.
I very much appreciate these video lessons, as they are a great aid as a visual material and are extremely useful.
