This unit presents the different types of tests that exist to evaluate an individual’s level of English, and the contexts in which each test is appropriate.
I learned to differentiate between progress, diagnostic, placement and external tests. Perhaps most interestingly in my case, this unit introduced the idea that evaluating student progress regularly with brief tests might be the best approach, as the total absence of testing might not be optimal to really find out what the class remembers from a set of lessons – and might not be allowed by the institution in which I will be working – while imposing too many long tests probably comes down to having students memorise information rather than developing fluency.
