There are four skills in any language - receptive skills - reading and listening and productive skills - speaking and writing. They are equally important and should all be taught. Reading can be different according to the categories - reading for a purpose and reading for entertainment. A teacher should choose the material for teaching receptive skills carefully. A good teacher should keep in mind some points: the material should motivate and interest students. Vary the material. Use realistic comprehension tasks that aid understanding. Pre-teach complex vocabulary or structures.
