Unit 12 focuses on the teaching of the second important set of skills in English and in any other spoken language. These skills particularly being the Productive Skills which focus on the Speaking and Writing aspects of a language. The lesson talked about the importance of accuracy (correct usage of grammar and vocabulary) and fluency (ability to confidently communicate continuously) as well as the differences between the two skills in oral (and written) communication. This was followed by examples of teaching activities to cover the different phases in which accuracy or fluency becomes the main focus of the productive skills in a phase of the lesson. For example, ideas for a controlled activity that focus on the study phase of the lesson which cover the importance of accuracy rather than fluency. This is important as it in turn covers techniques and activities that can help both the teacher and student in the English language classroom. It therefore gave me ideas on how to structure a suitable lesson to address each subject and the relevance of accuracy versus fluency, in relation to Speaking and Writing (productive skills) within the context of an English language lesson.
