This unit discusses the productive skills of speaking and writing. Both are equally important in communication but do have their differences. For example, clear writing is heavily dependent of high accuracy. Speaking effectively depends a lot on the level of fluency. While fluency and accuracy are important to all types of communication, certain skills demand more or less of these attributes. Keeping this in mind a teacher can more effectively use class time. When drilling, (a highly controlled speaking activity) accuracy is of utmost importance. However when engaged in a more open, creative activity such as a game or debate, the focus is more on fluent output. Because of this, accuracy is less important and the teacher should focus on eliciting as much fluent speaking or writing as possible.
