Unit 14 focuses on course books and other lesson materials that teachers can choose to use during their classes. Materials can essentially be divided into two groups, namely authentic materials and created materials. The former is made to cater to native speakers and consequently, authentic materials are not always suitable for EFL students. However, since they are often more interesting, they can be used inside the classroom, if selected carefully. On the other hand, created materials are usually made by teachers to supplement course books and can be graded to the specific level of students. A number of examples of such created materials are included in this chapter as examples. Lastly, this unit discusses the advantages and disadvantages of using course books and how to best use them in class.
This unit is particularly useful, since it includes many practical examples of created materials that I will be able to use to supplement course books in the classroom. I now also have a better grasp of the importance of using different types of lesson materials in order to keep students engaged, rather than fully relying on the use of a textbook.
