This unit deals with the importance of teaching pronunciation and how to effectively do so. The material breaks down how a teacher can approach pronunciation. There are different methods such as modelling, using diagrams, and even tongue twisters. However it is not necessary for all students to lean a phonetic alphabet. While this can help the teacher, this may confuse students when a simpler path to understanding is available. Furthermore, pronunciation is more than making the right letter sounds. Stress and intonation play a big role as well. As a native speaker it may be easy to gloss over the reason for certain stresses and intonations. But to a learner, it may not be so apparent for example, that a rise in tone indicates a question, or that in a statement, stressing a word in question can indicate a correction has been made.
