Hermann, Missouri TESOL Online & Teaching English Jobs
This unit covers the receptive skills; reading and listening, as opposed to the productive skills (speaking and writing). It comprehensively covers all aspects of teaching receptive skills, whether it is for a purpose (e.g. reading a book for a school book report) or for entertainment (e.g. reading a book by one's favorite author for pleasure). It covers the different ways in which we read, ranging from predicting what the article/ radio brief is about from the title/ headline to in-depth analysis and understanding of a text. It then dives into the problems a teacher could encounter, and ways to mitigate the risks associated with these issues. For example, if it is clear that there will be some difficult vocabulary, the teacher can use the first part of the Study phase to cover the essential difficult vocabulary without which the students will not understand the content. Aside from this, it is important not to choose the same topics or topics only the teacher likes, as motivation and interest are extremely important so that learning can occur. To keep the interest going, it is important that tasks relating to the lesson are of interest to the students and that in the Engage phase, the teacher is generating interest by having a discussion with the class.
