This first unit establishes a basis of understanding of teachers' roles in a classroom setting, the characteristics of a good teacher, the characteristics of a good student, the various reasons for student motivation for success in a classroom, the differences in classroom behavior across ages, and the different levels in English fluency. I believe it was important for me to learn about the different roles that teachers establish in a classroom because teaching is not a one-size-fits-all skill. Depending on students' age, cultural background, and other factors that contribute to the classroom environment, it is crucial that a teacher adjusts his or her teaching styles to the classroom context in order to achieve optimal success of students. I was also pleased to learn that there are some personal characteristics that attribute to "good" teachers - such as patience and kindness...both of which I value as positive virtues. It was also important for me to learn about the different levels in english proficiency, that way I can best serve students by gaining an understanding of what they already know - that way I can build upon their prior knowledge or fill-in certain information that they are lacking.
