It is often said that many teachers give less attention to the teaching of pronunciation because oftentimes most teachers lack the confidence and training to teach such skills effectively. I must admit that being a native speaker I was never taught phonetics in school. Let’s now take look at what unit 13, which looks at teaching pronunciation and phonology. Phonology looks at the study, science, analysis, and classification of physical prosperities of sounds. There are three areas of phonology which are the stress, rhythm, and intonation. Intonation is generally considered to be variation in volume and pitch. Stress, on the other hand, is more concerned with individual words. Intonation will normally carry the message of the sentence. Intonation patterns look at rise/fall. Finally, let’s bear in mind that pronunciation can affect the quality of a student’s communication in many ways. It is very important to use mouth diagram, tongue twister and modeling sounds using our own mouth when teaching pronunciation in order to have students pronounce the English words correctly and effectively.
