As teachers, it is very important that we evaluate student’s English to determine whether the students are making any progress in their learning. It is very important that we evaluate student’s performance so that we can identify their needs or problems areas efficiently and effectively. Evaluation helps teachers to know the students' language level. There are many different types of exams that teacher can use to test the students' language ability and progress. Placement test allows the teacher to place the students into the correct class according to their language ability. Progress test, on the other hand, is used periodically to assess what language student’s remembered or acquired and what language has been forgotten. A diagnostic test is usually given at the start of the course to see what the students already know and don’t know. The diagnostic test helps teachers in planning future lessons. Most school will use practice test to help students prepare for external exams, such as IELTS, TOEFL and Cambridge Exams. Finally, many students will study for external exams for various reasons such as migrating to another country where English is their first language, to study in an English speaking country and to work in an English speaking country.
